Vincent Mentzel Symposium: Future Memories

The Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam presents a one-day international symposium on 14 May exploring the impact of photojournalism and documentary photography on our perceptions of the world. Future Memories brings together photographers, academics, and representatives from art and media institutions. Through lectures, round table discussions and interviews we will discuss the influence of visual tropes and conventions. Drawing from visual culture and art history, visual conventions serve as powerful tools to communicate complex narratives. While rooted in both historical and contemporary photographic practices, these visual languages prompt a crucial question: how universal is this visual culture we have created? We will explore contemporary practices of photographers, curators and institutions, and examine how they perceive the evolving role of photography.

The symposium is open to professionals and the general public.
