Writing Box ‘Eggplant’
Kōmo Tōzan, 1936
The shape of this convex ‘tortoise lid’ was made by letting hemp cloth soaked in lacquer harden over a mould. The same basic layers had to be applied to this core of lacquer and cloth as to a wooden core. The strong relief of the eggplant was probably also added to this mould. This was a new, time-saving invention by Tozan. A Salon piece from 1936.
