Thousands of people have flocked to see the final of a women’s skating competition. Houkje Gerrits Bouma crosses the finish line first. Elated, she throws up her arms in triumph. A boy has even climbed a tree to follow the event. During the winter season, everyone went out on the ice, and women commonly participated in speed skating as well.

    Schaatswedstrijd voor vrouwen op de Stadsgracht te Leeuwarden, het moment van de finish van de twee finalisten. Voor een groot publiek, waaronder Franse officieren, streden vierenzestig ongetrouwde vrouwen om de hoofdprijs, een gouden oorijzer. Voor meer bewegingsvrijheid hadden zij hun mantels afgegooid.

Explanatory note

  • Baur schilderde de finalisten met hun blote armen, een afgeworpen mantel op het ijs. De weinig verhullende kleding zorgde voor veel verontwaardiging en het was voorlopig de laatste vrouwenwedstrijd.
