Winter in the Scheveningen Woods

Anton Mauve, 1870 - 1888

With the invention of modern painting materials, such as the paint tube, working out of doors became much easier. For the first time, artists ainted directly what they saw before them. They focused on details such as the reflection of light in water, and on natural elements like sand and snow. Here Mauve presents a wood gatherer at work, but seems particularly fascinated by the texture and colour of snow and wintery trees.
