Wine casket

anonymous, c. 1575 - c. 1600

The ends of this casket suggest that it could be hung up and the contents poured by tipping it. Depicted is a scene of merrymaking mythological figures. The river is filled with wine flowing from the jars.

    Wijnvat gesneden uit een brok bergkristal met montuur van goud met email, parels, robijnen en smaragden. Het vat is versierd met voorstellingen van bacchanten met panters, en golven met draken en stroom-goden, in mat slijpwerk.
