Weissenhof Chair
Ludwig Mies van der Rohe (1886-1969) and Lilly Reich (1885-1947), manufacturer: Berliner Metallgewerbe Joseph Müller, steel, nickel and wicker, 1927 (designed), c. 1930 (produced)
In 1927, Mies van der Rohe, the later director of the Bauhaus, debuted his cantilevered chair based on an idea of Dutch architect Mart Stam. The generously curved springs lent the design a dynamic appearance and ensured a high level of sitting comfort. Marcel van Grunsven, the mayor of Heerlen, and his wife Gerty Janssen received this chair as a wedding gift.
