Weiblicher Kopf

Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, 1915

At the beginning of the 20th century, many European artists became fascinated by African sculptures. This was also the case for Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, co-founder of Die Brücke. This interest was related to a longing for a presumed ‘primitive’ time removed from the capitalism and industrialism of European society.
