Storage Cabinet No. 663

Rietveld, Wim, 1953

This cabinet belongs to a series of ‘furniture for the modest interior’ with which the manufacturer Gispen responded to the need for inexpensive and light furniture in the post-war Netherlands. The nine standard elements could be endlessly varied. The tenth ‘element’ was the colour in a palette based on the De Stijl movement. An ordinary cabinet could thus be transformed into playful space-colour composition.
