Getting started with the collection:
Wall drawing ‘Leve ik’ (Long live me)
Ed van der Elsken (signed by artist), 1958
From the 1950s, Van der Elsken’s style became quirkier and he increasingly photographed himself and his family. Moreover, he became more comfortable portraying people on the street up close. He was a voyeur and yet also emphatically present in his work, both an outsider and his own subject. He would not have photographed the slogan ‘Leve ik’ (Long live me) written on a wall had he not somehow related to it.
