Explanatory note

  • Waarschijnlijk stelt de vrouw kunstenaar en uitgever Mary Darly voor, de tweede vrouw van Matthew Darly. Afkomstig uit de tweede serie van zes, getiteld: Macaronies, Characters, Caricatures &c., uitgegeven door Matthew Darly in Londen tussen 1771 en 1773. De term 'macaroni' werd gebruikt in Engeland in de tweede helft van de 18de eeuw voor personen die op een overdreven wijze de laatste mode volgden. In zekere zin vormden zij de voorlopers van de dandy's.
