Vrijburg Palace

anoniem, 1642 - 1652

Johan Maurits only stayed in Brazil for seven years. His many costly plans for the colony suggest that the governor himself had envisioned this differently. Construction of his Vrijburg Palace was never completed, but this cut parchment silhouette gives an impression of the palace with an observatory in one of the towers. There are slave quarters on both sides.
