Getting started with the collection:
View from Hippolyte Fizeau’s Window in Paris
attributed to Hippolyte Fizeau, c. 1842
The daguerreotype is the earliest photographic process, capturing an image on a copper plate coated with a layer of silver. The image is unique. To make prints of it, Fizeau experimented with an etching press. First, he immersed the plate in an acid bath, which partially dissolved the surface and etched out the image. Then he inked the plate and pulled paper prints of it using an etching press.
