Vase with the story of Diana and Actaeon

attributed to Pierre Raymond, c. 1550

Working in white on a black ground, Pierre Raymond introduced subtle tonal nuances in his monochromatic depictions. The flesh tone of the figures is emphasized through the introduction of a bit of red. Unfolding around the vase is the story of the goddess Diana, who turned the hunter Actaeon into a stag for spying on her while she was bathing.

Description
Vaas van koper, gedecoreerd met voorstelling van email in grisaille tegen een zwarte achtergrond. De brede voet loopt over in een smallere stam. Daarop zijn bustes van putti en guirlandes afgebeeld. Het onderste deel van het vaaslichaam toont aan de ene zijde een badende Diana met haar nimfen, die wordt bespied door Acteaon met daarboven het opschrift DE.DIANE.ET.ACTEON; de andere zijde toon een jachtscène met mannen te paard en honden, die Acteaon met hertenkop aanvallen. De vaas is voorzien van twee S-vormige oren, die lopen van het breedste punt van de vaas tot aan de bovenrand van de halsopening.
