anonymous, c. 1740 - c. 1760

The vase portrays a Dutchman holding a pipe while a Javanese boy pours him a drink. What is intriguing is the vase’s dating to the mid-18th century juxtaposed with the appearance of the Dutchman, who looks like someone from around 1700. The painter evidently drew upon multiple sources, some of older origin, to compose this scene.
