In the 18th century many men chewed chewing tobacco, regularly spitting out the unwanted juices in specially designed vessels called spittoons. These examples are appropriately decorated with scenes from the tobacco harvest. Enslaved men pick tobacco leaves, while plantantion owners smoke. There are a number of spittoons on the table.
