Two lions holding an escutcheon

anonymous, c. 1515 - c. 1525

This archaic pair of lions, with two others (now in the Hermitage, Saint Petersburg), originally supported a bronze baptismal font in the monastic church of Bordesholm in northern Germany. The coats of arms are those of the patrons who commissioned the font, the wealthy knight Wolfgang Pogwisch and his wife. They made generous donations towards the expansion and renovation of the church in 1490-1520.

    De leeuw zit op zijn achterpoten, spert de grimmige muil open en heeft de staartpluim over de rug geslagen; de rechterklauw rust op de bovenkant van het asymmetrische schild, dat drie rozen in laagreliëf vertoont, de linker houdt de zijkant vast. Een rechthoekig uitsteeksel op het achterdeel van de leeuw, een grote vierkante opening in de buik.
