Two Young Couples Making Music and Courting on a Terrace

Jan Verkolje (I), 1660 - 1693

Music-making couples and companies were a popular theme in 17th-century painting, as also appears frequently in Jan Verkolje’s work. This drawing is related to paintings he made. The kneeling woman with a violin and the frontmost man appear separately in two of his pictures in almost exactly the same pose.
