Two Studies of a Marmot
attributed to Sinibaldo Scorza, Guercino [rejected attribution], c. 1620
The Italian artist Sinibaldo Scorza, to whom this sheet has recently been attributed, depicted not only horses, lions, and exotic birds in his paintings, but also had an eye for small, less spectacular animals. This marmot was probably drawn from life. The artist first lightly sketched the contours in black chalk, and then worked up the little creature’s bristly fur in pen and brown ink.
