Two Designs for a Brooch

Mathieu Lauweriks, 1910

The small-scale production of gold and silver jewellery was crucial for making the Hagen Silversmiths’ Workshop profitable. Lauweriks designed several pieces of jewellery, including a brooch with a swastika motif decorated with pearls. In Theosophy, the swastika is the symbol of divine power, good fortune and prosperity. Lauweriks also extensively used the swastika and the related meander motif in his work as an architect.
