De tekening is vermoedelijk een voorstudie voor een deel van de voorstelling op het linkerpaneel van de Gouden Koets. Dit is het paneel waarop het eerbetoon aan koningin Wilhelmina van de toenmalige koloniën Oost- en West-Indië is geschilderd. Het betreft het deel rechts waar twee jongens of jonge mannen op dienbladen producten uit de toenmalige koloniën aanbieden aan de Nederlandse Maagd. Op deze tekening is hun bovenlichaam echter onbedekt. Volgens het inventarisboek gaat het om Javaanse mannen.
