inscription: ‘By permission of the authorities at New Scotland Yard. The left-hand illustration is an enlarged photograph of a tell-tale finger-mark left by a criminal upon a piece of glass. The right-hand photograph is a similar enlargement of the criminal's thumb-print taken on paper. Eighteen identical points have been marked off to prove to the judge and the jury that this particular prisoner left the thumb-mark on the glass. (See chap. xi.)’
