Tsar Nicholas II and President Émile Loubet Greeting One Another

anonymous, after print by Jean Veber, 1901

Mocking depictions of intimacy between two men are not always about sexuality. The Russian emperor Nicholas II and the French president Émile Loubet kiss each other here as a sign of friendship between two nations. The print pokes fun at the so-called peace, because they are ignoring the wars raging around them. Male affection here is equated with political immorality.
