Trumpeter on Horseback

Jan Lievens, 1625 - 1628

As indicated by the later inscription at the upper left, this drawing of a flamboyant trumpeter was long ascribed to Rembrandt. In point of fact, the draughtsman was his contemporary Jan Lievens. When he made this ambitious drawing, Lievens was possibly sharing a workshop with Rembrandt in Leiden. Lievens had also trained with Lastman, well before Rembrandt, between around 1617 and 1619.
