Tric-trac Players by Candlelight

Jan Gillisz. van Vliet (mentioned on object), 1631 - 1634

Van Vliet – a contemporary and pupil of Rembrandt – often made etchings after his master, but this is his own invention. In a dark interior with a canopy bed, figures are playing tric-trac, a board game similar to today’s backgammon. Light plays a dazzling role, silhouetting the man masking the candlelight, which illuminates the player at left and the two spectators at right.
