Three Wine Cups Made with Booty from the Silver Fleet

Roelant Gerobulus, 1629

This set of matching, nesting wine cups was made to honour Piet Hein’s victory over the Spanish Treasure (or Silver) Fleet in 1628. This remarkable event is commemorated in the engraved text, which describes how the drinking vessels were fashioned from confiscated precious metal. The coat-of-arms of the commissioner, probably a member of the Sweers family, is engraved on the bottoms and lids.
