Three Models of Fuses

Drie modellen van houten buizen voor granaten van verschillend kaliber. Twee zijn conische houten buizen met een holle kom aan de bovenzijde, waarin de opgerolde lont werd gelegd; de lange buis van dit paar is niet helemaal doorboord. Het derde model heeft een bolle bovenzijde, afgesloten met een houten prop. Om de kop heen loopt een groef en er is een gat dwars door de buis geboord: hieruit wordt de lont naar buiten geleid en om de groef gelegd. Een vierde model, een Engelse metalen buis uit 1860, ontbreekt.

Entry

Three wooden models of fuses for shells of different calibres. Two of them are conical wooden tubes, the top hollowed out to provide a cup in which the match was rolled up. The long fuse of this pair has not been bored over its entire length. The third model has a dome-shaped top with a hole, sealed with a wooden plug. Around the head there is a groove, and straight through the fuse a hole: the match is led out of this hole around the groove.

A fourth model that was mentioned, that of a British metal fuse from 1860, is missing.

These fuses were for round shells. When loading, they were cut down to the estimated length, which depended on the distance. The fuses were ignited by the conflagration of the charge when firing.
