Three Friends of Winter

Mochizuki Gyokusen, c. 1800 - c. 1850

The ‘three friends of winter’ comprise bamboo, pine and plum. The first two remain green in winter, while the plum blossoms herald spring. The pine tree makes it clear that the worst of the cold is over: snow is slipping off a branch. Gyokusen cleverly used the white of the paper to suggest snow.
