Drie ijzermonsters van gietijzer, alle gebroken, één incompleet. Ze hebben alle de vorm van een kruk, dun in het midden en met wijde uiteinden met een gat erin. Eén proefstaaf is in tweeën gebroken, de tweede in drie stukken en de derde ook in drie, maar het tussenstuk daarvan ontbreekt.

Explanatory note

  • Deze monsters werden genomen van een lang kanon van 60 pond, dat in 1859 aan boord van het raderstoomschip Amsterdam explodeerde. Zij werden klaarblijkelijk voor trekproeven gebruikt.

Three Cast-Iron Samples

Entry

Three test samples of cast iron, all are broken, one is incomplete. They are all thin in the middle, with wider ends with a hole. One is broken in two pieces, another in three pieces, and the third also in three pieces, of which the middle piece is missing.

These samples were taken from a long 60-pounder gun, which burst on board the paddle steamer Amsterdam in 1859. They were thus likely used as samples for tensile tests.
