Three men standing

Jacques de Gheyn II (1565-1629), black chalk, heightened with white chalk on light brown paper, c. 1600

De Gheyn has here drawn the same model in three different poses. He sometimes re-used figure studies such as this one in larger compositions. For example, he reintroduced the left figure – seen at an angle from the back with his arms crossed behind him – in the adjacent drawing, in which he assumes the guise of a farmhand.
