Stanley Brouwn, 1969
In late 1969, René Block, a gallery owner in Berlin, invited his business relations to explore the city with Stanley Brouwn. The documentation of these walks formed an 'exhibition.’ The publisher Armin Hundertmark, based at 12 Blumenweg, took Brouwn to Potsdamerplatz to see the Berlin Wall. There, for his guide, Brouwn photographed the buildings standing out against the overcast sky. Starting in 1972, stanley brouwn regarded anonymity as a crucial, intangible aspect of his work. He began using lowercase letters when writing his name, and avoided sharing biographical information or interpretations that he believed detracted from the power of the work of art. He prioritized the viewer’s personal experience above all else. The adjacent label, using Brouwn’s preferred font (Helvetica), largely aligns with his outlook. His works of art dating from before 1972 are provided with the standard data and explanatory notes typically found at the Rijksmuseum.
