There Was a Commotion in the House

Sara Troost, 1769

In the fourth scene, everything has gone haywire: empty bottles litter the ground. A man standing on a chair attempts to fill his glass with a sweeping gesture, oblivious to the fact that he has switched the jug and the glass. The remaining guests drink or drowse. The Roman bust on the mantle averts its imperial head in disgust.
