The old days
Piet van der Hem (mentioned on object), 1916-11-04
The general right to vote for men was introduced in 1917, but women were given a passive right to vote, only being allowed to stand for election. Two years later, they were allowed the general right to vote too. Aletta Jacobs had fought for this. In this print from 1916, a woman, perhaps Aletta Jacobs herself, comes to claim her rightful place. The old men from the Upper and Lower Houses of the Dutch Parliament don’t agree, preferring instead to keep everything as it was.
