The Women of Rome Gathering at the Capitol

Pieter Isaacsz., c. 1600 - c. 1602

Women from various countries and eras are seen storming the Capitol in ancient Rome in protest against a proposed ruling that would henceforth allow men to have two wives. This rumour had been spread by the young boy Papirius, seen standing at the far right between his mother (in yellow) and several senators (in red).

    De oploop der Romeinse vrouwen op het Kapitool te Rome na de bekendmaking door de kleine Papirius dat in de Raad besloten is, dat elke man voortaan twee vrouwen zou mogen hebben. Op het plein hebben zich rond het ruiterstandbeeld van Marcus Aurelius vele vrouwen verzameld, sommigen gewapend met huisraad. In het midden op de voorgrond een kind in een hondenkar.
