The Van Nelle Factory, Rotterdam

attributed to Iwao Yamawaki, c. 1930 - c. 1932

A trained architect, Yamawaki spent a few years in Germany from 1930 pursuing his studies at the Bauhaus. Armed with a camera he travelled to the Netherlands and Russia, among other places. Almost as a matter of course he visited the recently completed Van Nelle Factory in Rotterdam, the epitome of Modernist architecture. Following his stay in Europe, he went on to become one of Japan’s leading architects.
