The Unfaithful Bride Abducted by the Devil

Caspar Luyken, 1704

An unfaithful woman can always be caught up by her past misconduct, even in the middle of her own wedding banquet. Here, the adulterous bride is taken away by the devil, while the guests, interrupting their dance, stand in awe at this unearthly vision. The scene is taken from an illustrated anthology of peculiar stories with a moralizing tone published in Germany in 1704.
