The Gallery of Fashion

In 1794 The Gallery of Fashion first appeared in England. Clearly inspired by the French Gallerie des Modes, the series was intended, according to the publisher, to demonstrate the superiority of English taste. English fashions were more decorous, and sometimes exceptionally voluminous. The three ostrich plumes in the young ladies’ turbans were required for introductions at court, being an emblem of the Prince of Wales.

    Drie dames in de grote Concerthal. Fig. 56: japon met v-hals en hoge taille. Kort bovenmouwtje met kwast en lange ondermouwen. Onderrok. Het kapsel versierd met haarbanden, aigrette en twee struisveren. Collerrette en collier met hanger. Waaier in de hand. Fig. 57: gestreepte japon met v-hals en geplooide halflange mouwen. Tulband met drie opstaande struisveren. Oorbellen en collier met monocle(?). Gedecoreerde vouwwaaier in de handen. Fig. 58: japon met v-hals en contrasterende bies met onderrok. Accessoires: tulband, oorbel, collier en bloemcorsage. Brief in de hand. Prent uit het modetijdschrift The Gallery of Fashion (1794-1803).
