At this time, Broughton Castle was in the possession of William Thomas, 15th Lord Saye and Sele, who greatly neglected the house. By 1819, the rooms were `daily dilapidating from misuse´. In 1837 the bulk of the house´s contents were relinquished in a twelve-day sale.
