The Courtyard of Fort Jaffnapatnam

Cornelis Steiger, c. 1710

The forts captured from the Portuguese were taken over and fortified by the VOC. These forts constituted a crucial chain that extended along the entire coast of the island. While their primary purpose was to deter European competitors, they were also used to restrict the king of Kandy’s freedom of movement.
