The Consciousness of the Wound

Anton Heyboer (signed by artist), 1954

As a child Heyboer felt misunderstood. The traumatic experience of his detention in a Berlin labour camp during the war bolstered his conviction that he could not lead a normal life. Heyboer suffered both physically and mentally. In 1951 he voluntarily admitted himself to the Provincial Hospital in Santpoort. His diagnosis upon being discharged was schizophrenia, with a Messiah complex.
