The Buddha Amida Nyorai

anonymous, c. 1500 - c. 1600

This Buddha is holding his hands on his lap in the meditation position. Amida Nyorai rules over the highest of the nine levels of the Western Paradise. Rebirth in this paradise is the highest attainment for a living being. The figure’s eyes are inlaid with crystal to enliven its appearance and to increase its power to ‘speak to’ the faithful.
