The Beheading of Egmont and Horne

The counts of Egmont and of Horne are among the most important nobles in the Netherlands. Immediately following Alva’s arrival they are imprisoned and accused of high treason, lese-majesty, and supporting the Protestants.Their execution takes place on 5 June 1568 in Brussels’ Grand-Place. News of their beheading travels beyond the Netherlands via prints and is met with great revulsion.

    De onthoofding van de graven van Egmond en Horne, 5 juni 1568, in vijf taferelen. Boven twee scènes waarin de graven knielen op het schavot terwijl de beul met zwaard het trapje naar het schavot beklimt, links Horne, rechts Egmond. Onderaan het schavot na de executies, met de hoofden op staken. Links het portret van Egmond, rechts Horne. Boven de prent een opschrift met de lange titel in 6 regels in het Duits.
