The Battle of the Four Elements

I.P. (signed by artist), 1663

This enigmatic sculpture portrays the fundamental conflict between the four cosmic elements – Earth, Water, Air and Fire – personified as four fighting nude figures. They symbolize the instability of humanity and the world. The maker, the unknown Master I.P., was inspired by a painting of this virtually unique subject. He carved the group out of the trunk of a box tree, the bark of which is still partly visible.

    Beeld gesneden uit een dikke stam buxushout, waarvan de bast deels nog aanwezig is. De onderste helft - de basis - is massief cilindrisch en rondom voorzien van banderollen met de volgende opschriften: I.P. STATVARIVS INVENTOR. AMSTERDAMI 1663 (op banderol) en X á "Q" (op kleine banderol), het Griekse woord chaos vormend. Erboven is een vrij en rondom geconcipieerde voorstelling gesneden van de strijd van de Vier elementen: vier naakte figuren - twee mannen, twee vrouwen - die in een gevecht gewikkeld zijn; de naakte lichamen zijn in complexe wijze in elkaar vervlochten. Op de bodem zijn dieren en planten aanwezig, als symbolen van de elementen water (krab, vis, schelpen), lucht (zwaan, vleermuis) en aarde (bloeiende roos, schildpad, luipaard/tijger).
