The Arrival of the Royal Charles

Jeronymus van Diest (II), 1667

The Royal Charles was the most powerful warship in the English fleet. The Dutch captured the vessel during the raid on the naval base at Chatham in June 1667 and moved it to the Dutch port of Hellevoetsluis. The English ship’s flag is lowered to signify its surrender. The ship’s ornamentally carved counter is on display in this gallery.

    Het opbrengen van het Engelse admiraalschip de 'Royal Charles', buitgemaakt tijdens de Tocht naar Chatham, juni 1667. Het schip ligt voor kust, op de voorgrond een sloep, rechts in de verte een oorlogsschip van de Admiraliteit van de Maze. Links in de verte is de ingang van de haven van Hellevoetsluis te zien. In de linker benedenhoek is een stuk papier met inscriptie geschilderd waarin de historie van het schip beschreven wordt en het schilderij wordt opgedragen aan Cornelis de Witt, die samen met De Ruyter de Tocht naar Chatham ondernam.
