The Amsterdam City Hall

anonymous, anonymous, 1700 - 1799

This is a perspective view, a well-known form of entertainment for young and old in the 18th and 19th century. It must be viewed through a special lens that gives the image a marked three-dimensionality. Here, moreover, part of the windows has been cut out of the print and replaced by coloured paper. When a lit candle is placed behind the sheet, the windows light up creating an even more beautiful effect.
