The Patron Saints of the Crotta Family
Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo (mentioned on object), c. 1750
At the end of 1740s a member of the notable Venetian Crotta family commissioned a painting from Giovanni Battista Tiepolo. This print by Tiepolo’s son is a rendering of that picture. The Crottas came from Bergamo, where the saints here portrayed were venerated. The leading role is played by St Grata, who shows St Alexander’s decapitated head to her father. The drops of blood from Alexander’s neck change into flowers.
