Temple with Venus and Amor, Flanked by Jupiter and Juno

Meissener Porzellan Manufaktur, 1727

Kirchner based the shape of the niche with projecting columns on the Nymphenbad (Bath of Nymphs), a large water sculpture in the garden of the Zwinger, August the Strong’s main palace in Dresden. The loose touch of the architecture’s multicoloured marbling is very rare for porcelain painting. Venus’ right hand is broken off; she held a flaming heart in it.
