Teapot with a Decoration of Lions

anonymous, c. 1775 - c. 1799

The potter designed a special knop, or handle, for the lid: a reclining lion in front of a spinning ball. The same motif is mirrored on the teapot’s body, where two lions play with an openwork ball. In Chinese culture, lions (shizi), carry positive connotations as they are believed to ward off malevolent spirits and usher in good fortune.
