Tackle-board, sledge and top for making rope

anonymous, c. 1800 - c. 1860

A ropeyard or ropery comprises a spinning wheel for pre-twisting strands of string, a sledge for twisting five strands together, and a top to prevent the strands from tangling during twisting. This miniature ropeyard was once the equipment used by a modelmaker.

    Een touwslagerij bestaande uit een draaipaal voor het slaan en spannen van de strengen, een hoofd dat de strengen uiteen houdt en een slede voor het slaan van het touw. De draaipaal staat op een zware grondplank en heeft een raderwerk voor vijf strengen; een groot tandwiel dat vier kleine tandwielen in de hoeken aandrijft wordt bediend met een zwengel. De haken waaraan de strengen worden bevestigd zijn op de assen van de tandwielen gemonteerd en het raderwerk zorgt er dus voor dat de buitenste vier sneller draaien dan de middelste, die bovendien in de andere richting draait. De slede heeft een zware bodem en slechts twee wielen voor; het mechaniek heeft slechts een haak, waarbij de beweging van de zwengel via twee tandwielen wordt overgebracht. Het hoofd heeft vier groeven voor de buitenste strengen en een gat voor de middelste streng.

Entry

Tackle board, sledge and top, together forming a ropery.

The tackle board is mounted on a heavy wooden base and has a gear train for five strands. A crank drives a large toothed wheel, which drives four small toothed wheels in the corners, on which the whirls for the strands are mounted. The outer whirls thus turn faster than the central one, which is mounted on the large toothed wheel and thus also turns in the opposite direction. The sledge for rope laying has a heavy bottom with only two wheels at the front. Its mechanism has only one whirl, the movement of the crank being transferred by a large and small toothed wheel. The top has grooves for the four outer strands and a hole for the central strand.

This ensemble, basically a miniature rope-walk, was part of a model maker’s equipment.
