Synod of Dordrecht

after print by François Schillemans, 1619

This medal portrays a gathering known as the Synod of Dordrecht. This conference aimed at reconciling religious differences within the Protestant church. The strict Calvinists came out on top, while the losers were the more progressive Remonstrants, many of whose ministers were compelled to leave the Netherlands. The synod also resolved to commission a new Dutch translation of the Bible: the States Bible.
