Sword of Jacob Cabeljauw

anonymous, before 1573

In 1573 the town of Alkmaar was besieged by Spanish troops. The Dutch commander Cabeljauw led the forces that defeated this attack and forced the Spanish to retreat. He was promoted to military governor of Alkmaar and was probably presented with this sword as a token of honour. The text on the blade was presumably added in the 18th century to record the sword’s historical significance.

Description
De pareerstang van het kruisvormige gevest eindigt na een krul middenin in een tweede krul; de zijbeugels hebben twee knoppen; de gevestknop van gegoten ijzer heeft de vorm van een paddestoel en is versierd met twee kabeljauwen; de met leer bedekte greep is van hout en heeft drie groeven in het midden. De rechte kling is tweesnijdig en heeft een ruitvormige doorsnede met twee kromme pareerhaken; op het klingvlak staat een inscriptie geschilderd met zwarte letters op een witte ondergrond. Met een opschrift betreffende beleg van Alkmaar 1573.
